Mid North Coast, NSW
The Mid North Coast stretches from Port Macquarie in the south and Coffs Harbour in the north and has a charm of its own.
Port Macquarie was established as a penal settlement in 1821 and still retains some of its earliest buildings. As a tourist destination, it boasts a host of attractions: charm, history, great beaches, good surfing and fishing, and beautiful nature reserves and walking tracks. It also hosts the prestigious Australian Ironman Championships, previously held at Forster.
Coffs Harbour is a large coastal town known for its bananas (including the Big Banana attraction), its beaches and the overall holiday feel it manages to retain despite its size and level of development. It is beautifully located between the mountains and the sea, and its climate and vegetation are both reminders of its proximity to the subtropical north.
The road from the coast to the Dorrigo Plateau is known as the Waterfall Way. It leaves the Pacific Highway just south of Coffs and travels through one of the prettiest valleys in the state before climbing 1000 metres to the plateau. The Bellinger Valley houses a thriving arts and crafts community, and the steeper section of the road has waterfalls dropping down through mountain rainforest to disappear under the roadway.
