South Coast NSW
You may think a beach is a beach and whether you head north or south from Sydney is immaterial. To that extent you'd be right, but the south coast from Nowra to the Victorian border feels quite different from the north.
The most obvious difference is that it's slightly cooler – you're heading for the Southern Ocean rather than the tropics. The air is clear, the sea is a deeper blue and the hinterland prides itself on being clean and green.
The coast divides itself into roughly three regions. The Shoalhaven Coast in the north encompasses Nowra at the mouth of the Shoalhaven River, the clear water and white sands of popular Jervis Bay and the township of Ulladulla.
The Eurobodalla Coast from Batemans Bay to Narooma also includes the Montague Island Nature Reserve, with its large colony of little penguins. Seals, dolphins and turtles live in the surrounding waters, and whales pass by on their annual migrations.
The Sapphire Coast stretching from Narooma to the Victorian border is the home of Bega cheese and the historic whaling town of Eden.
The National Parks of the south coast hinterland are some of the most popular in the state. Morton, Deua and Wadbilliga attract thousands of campers and bushwalkers annually to explore the mysteries of their deep and mysterious bushland.
