South-West NSW & Murray River
The Murray is one of the world's great rivers. From its source in the Snowy Mountains, it winds for 2,530 km west and then south to meet the Southern Ocean near Goolwa in South Australia. Its banks are a mix of untamed bushland, hidden coves, small towns and old river ports. Paddle steamers and houseboats cruise its wide waters.
For much of its length, the Murray forms the border between NSW and Victoria. It was once the only means of access to the inland areas of both states and its huge catchment area now provides irrigation for a large area of southern NSW.
The region has earned a reputation as being NSW's breadbasket and it produces 90% of the state's citrus and millions of tonnes of rice each year. It is also the largest grape-growing and wine-making region in NSW and a major producer of stone fruit and cereal crops.
On the drier slopes of the western Riverina, the product is some of the best medium merino wool in Australia.
In fact according to the area's promoters, the Riverina has it all. Try it and see.
