        Central & North West NSW

Central & North West NSWThe Central and North West region of NSW is sometimes known as the Golden West, no doubt in honour of the heady gold rush days around Sofala and Hill End in the mid 1800s. The nuggets themselves have long gone, but a rich history and a wealth of local produce and unique attractions make the name equally fitting today.

The oldest inland town in the state was established at what is now the City of Bathurst. Its first European inhabitants were troopers, government officials and convicts, but the area was subsequently opened to private settlers. The agricultural industry still flourishes in the area, but the establishment of Charles Sturt University and Mt Panorama Raceway have turned Bathurst into a vigorous mixture of history, youth and culture.

Elsewhere in the region is Mudgee, famous for its sweet honey and its wines, Parkes for its radio telescope (star of the Australian movie The Dish), Dubbo for its Open Plains Zoo, Lightning Ridge for its opals and Coonabarabran for its Skywatch Observatory.

The Warrumbungle National Park west of Coonabarabran is one of state's most popular, with good visitor facilities making it easy to explore the forested ridges, and fascinating rock formations.
