Lord Howe Island
Lord Howe Island is a two hour flight from either Sydney or Brisbane. It is small – only eleven kilometres long and two kilometres wide – and palm forests cover about two thirds of its total land mass. Surrounded by clear coral waters and pristine beaches, the island achieved World Heritage Listing in 1982 for its rare collection of plants, birds and marine life and its exceptional natural beauty.
Walking tracks cover the island from the beaches and palm forests at sea level to the mist forests on the mountain summit. Its scenic roads are also perfect for cycling, with bikes readily available for hire and a maximum speed limit of 25kph.
Lord Howe offers scuba enthusiasts some spectacular dive sites and the clear waters of the island's sheltered lagoon are perfect for swimming, snorkelling and kayaking.
Lord Howe is the ultimate destination for bird watching, and even those who thought they didn't care for it will find themselves drawn in by the feathered colonies that exist cheek by jowl with ours.
Lord Howe Island offers accommodation for every budget but it is essential to book in advance. Visitor numbers are limited to 400 and camping is not permitted.
