Sydney is the oldest and largest city in Australia and one of the most beautiful in the world.

Before you dismiss this as being hopelessly prejudiced, take time to explore the timeless allure of Sydney Harbour, which was the deciding factor in the choice of site for the first European settlement in Australia and continues to define the ethos and lifestyle of the city.

But the Harbour, the Bridge and the Opera House don't constitute the sum total of Sydney's attractions. It is an active, vibrant city where old and new happily rub shoulders. It is alive night and day for those who never sleep, or quiet and still amid the trees of its spreading suburbs.

Play space in Sydney is fairly easy to find. The entire metropolitan area is bounded on the east by a chain of beaches from Palm Beach in the north to Cronulla in the south. Its northern boundary is the Hawkesbury River – wide, deep and perfect for sailing or water skiing and edged by the miles of untouched bushland protected by Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park.

To the south of the city, Port Hacking marks the start of the Royal National Park, extremely popular for its secluded beaches and picturesque walking tracks.

Parramatta in the west was the second European settlement and has many historical buildings, and Camden in the southwest is the birthplace of Australia's wool, wheat and wine industries.
