Central Coast NSW
The region stretching from the Hawkesbury River to the lakes south of Newcastle is known as the Central Coast. It is only an hour's drive north of Sydney and has long been popular as a weekend or holiday getaway.
Gosford lies at the head of Brisbane Water, an arm of the Hawkesbury which flows into the wide waters of Broken Bay opposite Palm Beach. The northern shores of Broken Bay are protected by two National Parks, Brisbane Water to the west and Bouddi to the east. Bouddi is particularly popular for camping, swimming and bushwalking.
Like the rest of coastal NSW, the Central Coast is bounded by a string of beaches fronting the Pacific. Terrigal, Avoca and McMasters are particular favourites with holiday-makers and surfers.
In the north of the region, a chain of lakes winds its way behind the coast from The Entrance on Tuggerah Lake to the tip of Lake Macquarie just south of Newcastle – a veritable still-water playground for all things aquatic. The Entrance is particularly noteworthy for the flocks of pelicans that gather each afternoon to be fed.
Yengo National Park and the Watagans National Park to the west of the Gosford and Wyong offer excellent opportunities for camping and bushwalking.
