Illawarra & Southern Highlands
From the top of the Bulli Pass south of Sydney, the nature of the Illawarra region is laid out in all its splendour. The coastline nestles between the forests of the Eastern Escarpment and the endless blue of the Pacific Ocean.
The largest city in the Illawarra is Wollongong. Much of the thinking about Wollongong is based on its reputation as a major producer of iron and steel, but this concept overlooks the city's attractive boat harbour and its excellent beaches.
Before you leave the coast, be sure to visit the spectacular blowhole at Kiama and the ferns and waterfalls of the Minnamurra Rainforest in Budderoo National Park.
The Southern Tablelands behind the Illawarra coast enjoy the luxury of four distinct seasons. The residents of the area have used this to their advantage, producing some of the most stunning gardens in the state, including the spectacular Tulip Festival held in Bowral at the end of September. History is alive and well in Moss Vale, Mittagong and Braidwood as well as Bowral, all of which nurture a flourishing antique trade from entire streetscapes preserved by the National Trust.
For a more energetic approach to the area, explore the Kangaroo Valley or the dazzling underground world of the Wombeyan Caves.
