      Darwin & Top End

Darwin & Top EndDarwin and the Top End of the Northern Territory can be addictive. It's an area with boundless opportunity to explore, experience and savour Australia in all its diversity. It's fascinating. It's different.

Darwin is a tropical city where more than 50 nationalities contribute their bit to the vibrant cultural mix. Take time to enjoy its exotic flowering trees, its outdoor lifestyle, its international restaurants, its beaches and its amazing sunsets.

Darwin is also the jumping-off point for one of the most striking places on earth. Kakadu National Park is not pretty in any pastel sense of the word. It's rugged, lush, diverse, intriguing and constantly amazing. Its Aboriginal rock art represents the longest historical record of any group of people in the world, and its wildlife is quite ridiculously abundant. It's one of those places you need to see to begin to understand – and true understanding began 50,000 years ago.

Litchfield National Park is closer to Darwin than Kakadu and a favourite with locals and tourists alike. Over a quarter of a million visitors come each year to explore the largely untouched landscape of monsoonal rainforest, spring-fed streams and waterfalls, sandstone outcrops and magnetic termite mounds. The park's numerous attractions include croc-free swimming holes and an interesting example of early NT homesteads, such as Blyth Homestead.

Arnhem Land is one of the few remaining areas in Australia where the land's indigenous owners continue to live traditionally. Access is restricted, but selected tour operators are permitted to take visitors into this pristine wilderness of wild coastlines, vast woodlands and rivers teeming with fish. The indigenous arts and crafts centres are exceptional, and the whole area is worth the temporary sacrifice of your lone-ranger persona.

In fact this might well be said of the whole of the Top End. Go on your own by all means, but tour operators in this other-world region might well show you places you never imagined.
