South East QLD & The Downs
The Southern Downs and the Granite Belt are Queensland's High Country: panoramic, peaceful and picturesque.
Start your visit at Ipswich, just 35 minutes from Brisbane and the state's oldest provincial city. Historic sandstone buildings, gracious colonial homes and a ride on a steam train will put you in touch with the state's past.
Less than 100 km inland you'll find Toowoomba perched on the very edge of the Great Dividing Range. The view from Picnic Point Lookout is breathtaking and the city's gardens are a constant delight. Toowoomba is an elegant city and the gateway to the gently undulating country of the Darling Downs to the west.
The Granite Belt south of Toowoomba is also part of the Great Dividing Range, one of the few places in Queensland with four distinct seasons. The combination of soil and climate produces luscious stone fruit, apples and berries and a concentration of excellent wineries. The centre of the region is Stanthorpe.
To the west of Toowoomba you'll find Roma on the Western Downs, the cradle of Australia's oil and gas industry and home to the Oil and Gas Museum. It is also the site of Queensland's oldest winery and Australia's largest cattle sales. Sundown and Girraween National Parks near the NSW border are the most popular of several in the region ideal for a bush break.
