Brisbane & Surrounds
Brisbane is a state capital in all the ways that count. It has all the amenities you'd expect of a large city, seriously business or actively entertaining. It also has a feel of its own – warm, friendly and happily relaxed. Its sub-tropical climate welcomes you to come and play.
One of Brisbane's most popular playgrounds is Moreton Island, 90 minutes from the city centre. The island's long beaches and freshwater lagoons are managed for recreation – think 'white sand, blue water, turtles and whales' and you're halfway there. If a gentle amble and a quiet swim aren't enough, you'll also find excellent facilities for sailing, windsurfing, sandboarding, sea kayaking, four-wheel driving, fishing and diving.
Just 40 minutes from the city is North Stradbroke Island, offering a range of accommodation from camping areas to resorts. North Stradbroke's most popular attractions are Blue Lake, Brown Lake, Twenty-two Mile Beach and Point Lookout – a good spot for whale-watching in winter.
South Stradbroke was separated from North Stradbroke by a storm in 1896. It is less developed than its northern neighbour, but has several resorts and a campsite.
St Helena Island is 5 km from the mouth of the Brisbane River. It is Queensland's most historic island, established as a maximum security prison for male convicts in 1867. The island is now a national park.
