Fraser Coast

The Fraser Coast, north of Noosa, is rich agricultural land fringed by its own complement of enticing beaches.

Its best-known destination is Fraser Island, the largest sand island in the world and the only place where tall rainforest grows in sand. Fraser is a National Park and a World Heritage Area known for its stunning scenery, its long beaches, its profusion of clear springs, streams and freshwater lakes and its bird and marine life.

You can reach Fraser from the town of Hervey Bay, itself a popular tourist destination. Stinger-free waters encourage diving, water skiing, windsurfing, kayaking, sailing and snorkelling. Hervey Bay is also known as Australia's whale-watching capital, with several companies offering whale watching cruises and aerial flyovers.

The shortest barge access to Fraser Island is from Rainbow Beach on the Cooloola Coast south of Hervey Bay. Best known for its coloured sands, Rainbow Beach is also increasingly popular with hang gliders.

Bundaberg to the north is an attractive regional city surrounded by a sea of sugar cane. Its pride and joy is the Bundaberg Rum Distillery, which you can tour daily throughout the year.

Mon Repos Environmental Park 14 km north of Bundaberg protects Australia's largest and most accessible turtle rookery. Here turtles come ashore from November to February to lay their eggs, and hatchlings emerge between January and March. Access to the beach is limited during this time, but regular guided tours are available.

While you're in the area, don't miss the spectacular sandstone cliff, deep rainforest gorges and abundant wildlife of Cania Gorge National Park.
