North Coast, Queensland

The North Coast region is still Barrier Reef territory. Islands, beaches, turtles, rainforest, mangoes – a feast for the senses, the palate and the spirit of exploration.

Townsville is the main city in the region and its 'dry tropical' climate boasts an average of 300 days' sunshine a year. Enjoy the natural attractions, the magnificent Reef HQ Aquarium, or have a gamble at Jupiters Casino.

Townsville's particular playground is Magnetic Island, just 20 minutes away by cat ferry. Two thirds of the island is National Park, with nearly 25 km of walking tracks, secluded but easily accessible bays and beaches, and lots of koalas.

Hinchinbrook is the largest island in the area, a National Park uninhabited except for the environmentally friendly Hinchinbrook Island Resort. Palm-fringed beaches, inland rainforest, tropical birds and butterflies, peace and tranquillity – it's all there.

Dunk Island further to the north offers all this too, as well as an array of adventure sports for the more energetic.

The departure point for Dunk Island is Mission Beach, a well-equipped holiday resort offering white-water rafting, tandem skydiving, fishing, sailing and trips to the Reef.

Inland, on the edge of the Gulf Savannah region, is the unique Undara Volcanic National Park. The Undara Experience is a combination of wilderness experience, bush tradition and the fascinating geological wonder of the lava tubes. These hollow tunnels were created by lava flows over 190,000 years ago and are still accessible in many sections. Explore them on a guided tour.
