Cape York, Queensland
Cape York is a rugged, intriguing and endlessly fascinating wilderness area, more easily accessible from April to November – the Dry. It remains sparsely populated and relatively untouched, a land of dusty tracks and abundant river systems, human solitude and natural abundance.
The National Parks of Cape York are some of the most impressive in the country: the wild coastal scenery of Cape Melville, the spectacular wetlands and waterbirds of Lakefield, the rivers and wilderness areas of Mungkan Kandju, the rugged hills, wildlife and lowland rainforest of Iron Range. Jardine River at the tip of the Cape is perhaps the most spectacular of all. The Jardine River is the largest perennial stream in Queensland and the park protects 400,000 hectares of true wilderness.
Cape York is not for the inexperienced, the faint-hearted or the ill-prepared to tackle alone, but it is infinitely rewarding and totally memorable.
