Outback QLD
Queensland's Outback is everything the Australian Outback should be – the 'sunburnt country' under a vast sky with attitude.
The most Outback of all outback destinations is the Simpson Desert in the state's south west corner. The striking colours of the desert's sand dunes, saltpans, gibber-ironstone flats and endlessly blue sky perhaps epitomise one of the country’s most widely accepted images.
Entry to the Simpson Desert is from Birdsville, which is also the start of the old stock route known as the Birdsville Track. Birdsville is particularly famous for its annual race meeting in early September, when the population grows from 120 to 6,000.
The nearby Channel Country is a haven for all types of birdlife.
Longreach is the largest town in Queensland's central west. It is the site of the Australian Stockman's Hall of Fame, built as a tribute to all those who were part of the development and lifestyle of the outback.
If you continue north along the Matilda Highway you'll come to Winton, where Banjo Paterson wrote Waltzing Matilda in 1895. Further still and you'll reach Mt Isa, home to The Mine, the Royal Flying Doctor Service Base and School of the Air.
At Camooweal near the Northern Territory border you'll find the Camooweal Caves National Park, where the sinkholes in the dry Barkly Tableland lead to extensive caverns linked by shafts up to 75 m deep.
