Kangaroo Island, South Australia

Kangaroo Island is a world-class nature-based tourist destination, so far totally unspoiled by crowds or commercialism. It is only 30 minutes by air from the mainland and less than an hour by ferry from Cape Jervis on the tip of the Fleurieu Peninsula.

More than half of Kangaroo Island has never been cleared of its natural vegetation, and habitats range from wild coastline and beaches to coastal heath, river systems, wetlands and lagoons. This has resulted in an area where native flora and fauna thrive and proliferate.

One of the side benefits of this natural environment is the quality of the Island's food. Local menus are full of luscious local treats, including a particularly seductive liqueur called Island Sting made from the local honey.

Needless to say Kangaroo Island offers all you could wish for in the way of wilderness pursuits. But it also has excellent surfing beaches, great fishing spots and quite exceptional scuba diving. Its 450 km of largely undeveloped coastline is a particular joy for sailors – and for the sea lions, fur seals and little penguins that bask, breed and play in comparative peace.
