Murray River, South Australia
From the legends of the Dreamtime to the commerce of today, the Murray River has played an important part in the history and development of Australia. The South Australia Murray is the final stage of the river's journey to its outlet in Lake Alexandrina.
European settlers in the area first saw the Murray as a superhighway – a broad channel that carried supplies to inland settlements and brought back the wheat and wool on which they survived.
The advent of rail ultimately killed the river trade, but yesterday's trading vessels are today's tourist delight. The paddle steamers with their gentle pace and soothing splash are an ideal way enjoy and explore the river's secrets.
The towns along the northern reaches of the Murray are the result of the second European enthusiasm for the river. The first irrigation scheme begun here in 1887 ultimately transformed the area into one of the most productive in the country, now supplying a range of fruit and vegetables including apricots, plums, grapes, limes, olives and garlic.
The waters and banks of the Murray provide a constant supply of good food. It's excellent for water sports, and its stretches of undeveloped bushland are a bushwalker's delight and a haven for wildlife.
