Yorke Peninsula
Yorke Peninsula is shaped rather like Italy – a boot with its heel planted in Gulf St Vincent and its toe kicking into Spencer Gulf.
The first European settlers in the area took up pastoral leases in the 1830s, but Yorke Peninsula hit the colonial headlines when large deposits of copper were discovered at Moonta and Wallaroo in 1861. Cornish miners arrived in their thousands, and the Copper Triangle – the towns of Moonta, Wallaroo and Kadina – still celebrates its Cornish heritage with Kernewek Lowender held in May each year and reputedly the world's largest Cornish festival.
The Copper Triangle is also one of the most historically significant areas in the state. Buildings have been carefully preserved and the Moonta Mines State Heritage Area is a fascinating trip into history.
Yorke Peninsula's 600 kilometres of coastline draw visitors to walk the trails beside it, surf the waves curling onto its beaches or take the scuba diving trail to the shipwrecks lying beneath its waters. Innes National Park at the tip of the peninsula is one of the state's best.
