Outback South Australia
The South Australian Outback has a generous share of Australian icons and adventure, from desert tracks to opals. It is a vast landscape where towns are few and far between and full of character.
The most original of all is Coober Pedy, where about 80% of the population lives underground to escape the heat of the harsh, bare landscape. But these are no primitive dugouts. Underground accommodation can be as luxurious as anything above ground, and underground churches, galleries, bars and shops offer all the usual amenities in a highly unusual setting.
Coober Pedy lives and breathes opals. Visitors are encouraged to noodle – fossick in the mullock heaps – where anything you find is yours.
Marree is a true desert town sitting at the edge of the vast desert areas of Central Australia. It marks the South Australian end of the Birdsville track through the Strzelecki and Sturt Stony Deserts, and the Oodnadatta track through the heart of the state.
To the north of Marree is Lake Eyre, estimated to have salt deposits of more than 500 million tons. Lake Eyre has only filled three times in the last hundred years, but when it does, it becomes an immediate sanctuary for a huge variety of wildlife.
The deserts of the outback have a fascination all their own, but should be treated with immense respect. They are not kind to the inexperienced or ill-prepared.
