        West Coast Tasmania

Millions of years are caught in wilderness areas on Tasmania's west coast, sculpted by volcanic fire and glacial ice, and clad in trees that are centuries old. Mighty rivers and waterfalls, gorges and craggy peaks capture the earth as it once was, magnificent, timeless and undisturbed.

Most of the major towns of this region had their origins in mining. Unfortunately the European incursions were not always environmentally friendly. Even today, Queenstown sits in the midst of a desolation worth visiting for the surreal quality of its moonscape.

The town of Strahan on the edge of Macquarie Harbour was settled by loggers lured by the fine qualities of Huon Pine. A passionate and successful fight in the early 1980s to save the Gordon and Franklin Rivers caught the attention of environmentalists around the world, and Strahan today is a popular tourist town and the starting point for cruises up the Gordon.

The wilderness area of the West Coast includes the Cradle Mountain Lake St Clair, Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers and Walls of Jerusalem National Parks. We can talk about white water rafting and bushwalking, the Overland Track, the glacial lakes and the ancient forests. But really, this is one of those areas impossible to describe. See it for yourself.
