      Hobart & Surrounds

The city of Hobart is charming, picturesque and historic. A lot of Hobart's charm comes from its setting between the grand backdrop of Mt Wellington and the deep natural harbour of the Derwent River. Its particular distinction comes from its respect for the past, the combination of heritage and modern lifestyle that gives Hobart a depth not always achieved elsewhere.

The heart of the city is Sullivans Cove, a port, a historic precinct and a gathering place for locals as well as tourists. The stylish Georgian warehouses of Salamanca Place now house outdoor cafes, bookshops, galleries, and more.

But this is only the beginning as far as history is concerned. Don't miss Battery Point, Macquarie and Davey Streets, the Penitentiary Chapel or the Commissariat Store. Visit Richmond and New Norfolk, intriguing towns where despairing convicts nevertheless produced cottages, bridges and churches of superb craftsmanship.

For more modern entertainment, take a trip to Wrest Point Casino, the Cascade Brewery, the Lark Distillery and the Cadbury Factory, or sample the aquatic joys of the Derwent River.

Mt Field National Park, northwest of Hobart, has stunning walks through fern forests and some of the tallest trees in the world. It is also home to the spectacular Russell Falls, and to skiing areas on the higher slopes.
