South East Tasmania
To the south of Hobart is a pocket of countryside covering the Huon Valley, the D'Entrecasteaux Channel and Bruny Island.
The best way to explore this area is via the Huon Trail, a signposted self-guided route introducing you to everything there is to see – rivers and wilderness, farms and orchards, beaches and forest, arts, crafts and heritage.
The Trail will take you through the delightful small towns fronting the D'Entrecasteaux Channel. From the port of Kettering, you can take the car ferry to Bruny Island, a peaceful place of wild seascapes and alluring beaches, an abundance of wildlife and a rich and sometimes bloody history.
The heart of the Apple Isle's apple country is Huonville, a small town surrounded by orchards and hop fields. Roadside stalls throughout the area provide luscious fresh produce in season.
Other highlights of the region are the Hartz Mountains National Park (great bushwalking, lakes and fantastic views), Hastings Caves and Thermal Springs (vast dolomite caves and a thermal pool among tall timbers), and Tahune (take a walk above the forest canopy on the amazing AirWalk.)
