North West Tasmania
In 1825, our British lords and masters granted the Van Diemen's Land Company sovereign rights to a huge tract of country in Tasmania's northwest – rather like snatching a cake from its current owners and distributing slices with lordly largesse.
But in this case, appropriation wasn't all bad. From the tulip farms of Table Cape and the dairy country around Edith Creek to the potatoes and timber processed at Smithton, the northwest is the product of the VDL's early industry and strongly established agricultural base.
The Company's headquarters was originally at Stanley, where beautifully preserved buildings now house craft shops, cafes, potteries and galleries under the watchful eye of the Nut, the high, steep stump of an old volcano originally described by Matthew Flinders as a 'cliffy round lump resembling a Christmas cake'.
As with most of Tasmania, the North West is not mean about its natural attractions: the massive bluffs rising against the sea, the spectacular wild flowers and excellent bushwalks of Rocky Cape National Park, the sea eagles of the Arthur River and the forest wilderness of the Arthur Pieman Conservation Area. The last Tasmanian tiger known to inhabit the wild was captured at Marrawah – but who's to say there's not the odd one still lurking?
