        South West Tasmania

The southwest corner of Tasmania is all wilderness. It stretches from the coast to join Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers, all part of the great Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.

Most of the region is contained in the Southwest National Park, over 600,000 hectares of wild and magnificent country virtually undisturbed since time began.

At the northern edge of the park, the Gordon River Road runs through the forest between Lake Gordon and Lake Pedder to the Visitor Information Centre above Gordon Dam. Both lakes are excellent for trout fishing, and the Parks and Wildlife Service maintains good camping areas near the Edgar and Scotts Peak Dams on Lake Pedder.

But the best way to taste the full flavour of the South West is to walk through it. The South Coast Track runs from Cockle Creek (see South East) to Melaleuca and takes between six and eight days. The Port Davey Track starts at Melaleuca and finishes at Scotts Peak Road (or vice versa) and takes four or five days to complete.
