The City of Melbourne began life in 1835 as a barely legal settlement established by free settlers from Tasmania.

Disputes as to who was the actual founder of the colony were long and bitter. John Batman may have seen the area first, but John Pascoe Fawkner's party took up residence before Batman had time to get organised.

Melbourne's free status fostered a commitment to style, elegance and culture that still characterises the city today. Melbourne is a city of wide streets, delightful gardens, fine wine and good food. Fashion houses, boutiques, galleries and festivals flourish here, and its claim to social and cultural superiority is sometimes challenged but never vanquished.

The areas surrounding Melbourne are equally stylish. Cafés, antique shops and galleries add a cosmopolitan charm to the peninsulas of Port Phillip Bay, and the Yarra Valley produces world-standard wine. The Dandenong region supports a thriving community of artists, potters and sculptors in charming villages nestled among its hills and forests.

Lake Eildon in the north and the Mornington Peninsula in the south are favourite holiday spots for lovers of camping, bushwalking and water sports, and Geelong is Victoria's largest regional city.
