Great Ocean Road & South West Victoria

The coastline of Western Victoria can be a wild and treacherous place where the Southern Ocean hides hungry reefs and batters the rugged cliffs. It is also one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in the world.

The Great Ocean Road runs officially from Torquay in the east to Allansford in the west – Geelong to Warrnambool roughly speaking. But there's no reason to stop there. Visit the 19th-century fishing towns of Port Fairy and Portland, walk the 50 km sweep of beach at Discovery Bay and explore the spectacular river caves and gorges of Lower Glenelg National Park.

Torquay is known as Victoria's surfing capital, but it isn't the only beach along the road. The stretch between Torquay and Cape Otway is known as the Surf Coast, with conditions ranging from gentle waves and sheltered coves to world famous breaks where international surfing tournaments are held annually.

But the true wonder of the GOR is its combination of fierce coastline and natural forest. More than 700 shipwrecks lie beyond the cliffs and, behind the headlands, waterfalls plunge into mossy gullies and kangaroos wander through forests of blue gum and mountain ash to heathlands where native orchids grow.

In Port Campbell National Park, you'll see Victoria's best-known icon – the giant rock stacks known as the Twelve Apostles which rise more than 45 metres from the swirling waters of the Southern Ocean.
