North West Victoria & The Mallee

The northwest corner of Victoria is a region of contrasts, where rich farmlands support lush orchards and vineyards, almost within sight of the desert – the salt lakes and shifting sands of the Mallee.

The largest town in the area is Mildura on the Murray River, a thriving place with a colourful history, a penchant for paddle steamers and a plethora of tourist attractions.

Mildura is also the centre of an irrigation scheme supporting one of the richest agricultural regions in the country. Table grapes, nuts, olives and vegetables now hold their own with the citrus and dried fruits that first established the area's reputation, and more than 30 boutique wineries have opened cellar doors beside famous names such as Mildara and Trentham Estate.

At the other end of the scale, you'll find the arid and semi-arid parks of the Mallee – Big Desert, and Murray Sunset Wyperfeld. Big Desert and Murray Sunset remain relatively untouched, whereas Wyperfeld is slightly more hospitable. All host a multitude of birds, reptiles and small mammals, with Wyperfeld host to emus and kangaroos grazing the chain of mostly-dry lake beds meandering through its centre.

Hattah-Kulkyne is special among Mallee parks because of its freshwater lakes, a system of wetlands fed by the Murray, which support many waterbirds in the midst of an otherwise dry landscape.
