North East Victoria
Tucked away in the northeast corner of Victoria is an area rich in legends and cellar doors.
The region's most famous son is Ned Kelly, arrested at the Siege of Glenrowan in 1880 and sentenced to death. There's no question that Kelly was a bushranger, an outlaw and a strange choice for an icon but he was also a victim of blatant and gross injustice and immensely loyal to his family and friends – attributes guaranteed to win him a place in the 'fair-go' honour roll.
A legend of another kind is buried in a small hillside cemetery above the town of Corryong. Jack Riley is generally believed to be Banjo Paterson's Man from Snowy River, forever immortalised in ballad and film.
For wine lovers, the Rutherglen wine region is one of the oldest in Australia, producing notable muscats, rich reds and crisp whites at more than 20 cellar doors. Beechworth is known for its boutique cool climate vineyards and Glenrowan for its fortified wines and full-bodied reds.
King Valley and the Milawa region produce not only world-class wines – Milawa is home to Brown Brothers – but also a range of gourmet food. Venison, cheeses, mustards, chutneys and much more are available all year round, and orchards and berry farms deliver a range of fresh fruit in season.
