Gippsland & The Lakes, Victoria
The Gippsland & Lakes region in southeast Victoria is one of the state's most popular holiday spots.
Wilson's Promontory is probably Victoria's favourite national park, a combination of well-developed facilities and wilderness, of swimming beaches and rugged headlands, of exploration and adventure.
To the east of the Prom, Nooramunga Marine and Coastal Park gives way to the sweep of the Ninety Mile Beach and the Gippsland Lakes, almost equally beloved of holidaymakers. Here, five rivers flow into a series of lakes and lagoons behind the dunes that separate them from Bass Strait, making up the largest navigable inland waterway in Australia. They draw thousands, who come to fish, swim, sail, water ski, walk or simply sit. The gateway to the Lakes is the holiday and fishing town of Lakes Entrance, known for its fresh seafood.
Croajingolong National Park further east is a place of pristine beaches, tall forests, abundant wildlife and tranquillity.
The very best of the region's food and wine can be found along the Gourmet Deli Trail, a self-drive tour through the cheeses, smoked meats, seafood, preserves, berries, beers and wines of this gastronomically luscious region.
